Everything is interesting!

Hello :) My name is Matthew Lloyd. I have been working as an artist, graphic designer and model maker for over 20 years, and building cob ovens is a personal passion that has become a new business.
I became interested in living sustainably when I visited the Eden Project in its opening year. It inspired me. A vision realised in such a beautiful manner, knee-deep in ideas.

I wanted to create my own Eden, at my home. It took some years of thinking, dreaming, planning, researching, but eventually I was on a mission to design and build my very own straw bale studio from which to work. On the way I explored many building methods - including cob. In order to learn more about cob I found myself at a cob oven workshop.

What a wonderful thing a cob oven is! I was hooked. After building one at home, I was part of a project to build an outdoor classroom at my children's Primary School. They had to have an oven! After a successful funding application we had a full week of cob oven building. It was bliss. The project won a National PTA Award for 'Changing the life of a School'. Incredible.

FCOCobitterleyoven04Ever since I have wanted to replicate this experience - share it with other schools - share the love of cob ovens and show how they have the potential to inform, educate and entertain children as part of their outdoor learning experience.

So The Fabulous Cob Oven Company was created. I have now worked with schools all over the UK, and run workshops at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, client's homes, and Community Gardens. Yes, I did eventually build my straw bale studio!

IMG1467Here it is. I present talks and workshops on straw bale construction. It's an amazing system - I followed the simple recipe designed by Barbara Jones of Amazonails for a load bearing structure. It far surpassed my expectations, and I want to do it again, and make it my home.

I continue to work as an artist and graphic designer as well being cobovenman, and when I'm not doing these things I like to walk, cycle, take photographs and spend time with my two children.

Pearl Mussel Sculpture

In October 2017 I showed my Freshwater Pearl Mussel sculpture work at Out of Nature: a month-long International sculpture exhibition in Herefordshire, alongside building cob pizza ovens with children at schools in Glasgow, Manchester, Camberley, Staines, Bristol and Herefordshire.

In 2018 I will be working with schools around the UK, and running my One Day Cob Pizza Oven Workshops, sharing my love of wood-fired cooking and cob oven building. It's good for your soul :)
